In-Command was designed to help prepare you to become capable and responsible boating enthusiasts.  Unlike traditional boater safety courses that give you the basics, In Command gives you practical experience behind the wheel with a licensed USCG Captain right next to you.  Our goal is to teach you everything you need to become a confident operator who fully understands the Rules of the Road, navigation, dockside maneuvers, underway operations and most importantly, safety.
Captain David Fetherston is the managing partner of In-Command and brings over 40 years of experience to the classroom and the cockpit.  He grew up on the South Shore of Long Island and spent every summer cruising on the bay, fishing off shore, water skiing and racing sailboats.  After graduating from Hofstra University, Captain Fetherston enrolled in Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and received his commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy.  He joined the crew of the USS Valdez (FF1096) as the Main Propulsion Assistant with overall responsibility for the main engineering plant, including the boilers, generators and the main engines.  During his tenure as a Division Officer, Captain Fetherston became the Special Sea and Anchor Detail Conning Officer with responsibility for maneuvering the ship during all special evolutions underway.  Since the Valdez was a single screw vessel, Captain Fetherston became a ship handling expert under the most difficult conditions, including replenishments at sea.
He later was promoted to Chief Engineering Officer with overall responsibility for the entire engineering department, holding a Surface Warfare Officer qualification as well as Officer of the Deck Underway and Engineering Officer of the Watch. After leaving active duty and the reserves, Captain Fetherston received an MBA with honors from Babson College in Wellesley. Massachusetts.

In-Command is a new concept in powerboat and sailboat training, designed to take you from your boater’s safety course to gaining the skills you need to command a vessel with confidence and ability.  Before you buy or rent a boat, you owe it to yourself, your friends and family to get the best training in the industry before you get underway.

In-Command is a comprehensive, hands-on training course that is a practical application of critical safety, boat handling and seamanship skills aboard one of our boats out on Narragansett Bay.  Much like a driver’s education course, we will teach you everything you need to know to make your experience on the water enjoyable and stress-free.  Our instructors will teach you:

  • The Basics of Navigation, including chart plotting and GPS

  • Getting Underway from the Dock

  • Running in a Harbor and In Open Water

  • Anchoring

  • Disaster Control and Recovery

  • Underway at Night

  • Returning to Port (landing and mooring)

In-Command combines on shore instruction with individual or group underway time to give you the experience you need to be confident at the helm.  It’s the training you need for a lifetime of fun on the water.
